FAKE Daily Telegraph is apparently accused of putting fake names on agency copy. Read Press gazette story.
During the early days of the Sixties one of the Stockholm tabloids used to sign copy from AP with an invented homegrown byline. As this is pre CNN there was a competitive edge in having your own staff in remote places.
The competitor got fed up in the end and published the news that unfortunately the famed world reporter from the competitor has suddenly died and we could not expect any more stories from him.
This could be an urban legend. But as one of my journalist heroes once said, if it’s not true, it should have been.
